Why Horses?

Horses are large, powerful, hypersensitive animals. When
with horses, everything is so "alive."
They create a dynamic, real medium requiring us to be
"present" and engaged.
Horses perceive "in the moment" emotional states and are
able to react in ways that give us a lot of information.
Horses use authentic, "honest" communication. They offer
immediate feedback that shows what is hidden within us.
They are herd animals. They can model leadership and
follower skills and challenge our ability to set and maintain
boundaries.
The group felt frustrated as they tried to
maneuver only one of the horses in
between the standing barrels. This
activity required them to use teamwork
without talking to each other or touching
the horse, and some key issues were
surfacing. As they processed,
afterwards, with the therapy team, they
began to see how the various actions
among them either helped or hindered
the task. Joshing one another lightly,
they acknowledged their
communication breakdowns. They
noted parallels with situations at work
and home and came up with some new
strategies to try.
